Inspired by the tremendous success of the Zoological Garden of
Berlin, founded in 1843, the citizens of Breslau wanted an animal
garden of their own. Under the leadership of the mayor of the city,
Doctor Elwager, a committee of thirteen influential Breslau
citizens was formed on 7 March 1863. A joint stock company with a
capital of 30,000 Thalers was founded to be the holder of the
animal garden. After the joint stock company Breslauer Zoologischer
Garten had been constituted on 10 July 1865 the company bought a
plot of 24,7 acres next to the Oder river, roughly two miles from
the city. Until 1864 the enthusiastic people of Breslau subscribed
shares for 48,250 Thalers capital and made many donations of

with horse drawn railway, a rarity, only two certificates were

A concession for a normal gauge railway, running from the Westend
of Elberfeld through the then Königstraße and further via Elberfeld
to Barmen and to Rittershausen, was given in 1872. In the same
year, the concession was sold to the Deutsche
