In 1858, Allgemeine Versicherungs-Gesellschaft Helvetia, the first
Swiss insurance company to offer insurance against the risks of
land, river and sea transport, was founded in St. Gallen. Three
years later, in 1861, the Schweizerische
Feuerversicherungsgesellschaft Helvetia was founded as a private
fire insurance company, also in St. Gallen. The trigger for the
foundation was the fire in Glarus, in which two thirds of the city
fell victim to the fire on the night of 10/11 May 1861 and half of
the inhabitants became homeless. Helvetia quickly expanded to all
