The South Behar Railway was established in 1895 and operated a
broad-gauge line that stretched from Luckeesarai in Monghyr
District to Gaya, covering a distance of approximately 79 miles
(126 km). The line was inaugurated in two stages in 1900 and
completed in 1901. It was privately owned by the South Behar
Railway Company and was leased to the state to be operated as part
of the East Indian Railway (EIR) network. In 1906, the Government
of India took over the railway but continued to have it operated by
the EIR
